Concept Paper on SLC Dropout Rate in Nepalese Villages

Concept Paper on SLC Dropout Rate in Nepalese Villages

In our country, the average SLC dropout rate is more than 45%, which is very high in itself. The dropout rate varies from place to place. In himalayan region, the rate is above 70%. In my birthplace Jaubari, Gorkha, which is located in the himalayan belt of Nepal, has had a SLC dropout rate of 68% in the past year, which means only 32% of the students complete their SLC examination and the rest of the students either give re-examination or they quit studying. There are many reasons behind the massive dropout rate, but the main reason is lack of a good library. In this village, not a single library is there. A library is a must for students, especially those who are in their higher classes. I think to somewhat solve the dropout problem, a library needs to be made in Jaubari. But it’s challenging and very costly to establish a physical library in that region. The condition of roads is not good and hence the cost of transportation is very high. Also, the cost of manpower and regular maintenance cost may result in a large amount of money and the fee for the public may be unaffordable to most of the villagers. So, I have come up with the idea of a digital library. This concept does not require a lot of manpower and is also cost effective. The basic aim is to reduce cost, increase effectiveness, and also make it scalable. Digital Library can be made available in all the regions of Nepal where it is not easy to establish a physical library. In city areas too, this will be more effective than the physical libraries since people are favoring reading in their laptops and mobiles nowadays, and one can read from their own home in their leisure time. After successful implementation of this project, the villagers will then have great learning resources and hopefully the dropout rate will also decrease by a great percentage. So, for the brighter future of the students and the country this project is very necessary.

Project Description

The project is a digital library project. which is actually a mobile app and a software. The app can be installed in smartphones and students can browse all the necessary materials for their study in a single app. This app will include every course materials, lectures and notes that are taught in school, hence the classes can run smoothly even in the pandemic period.

We’ll start this project by collaborating with local bodies. We’ll get their support first to make sure that the product we make will be used in schools. Then, we’ll hire some volunteers who are skilled in programming, designing, deploying the software and willing to volunteer in the community project. We can find volunteers from the open contribution platforms like Github. Then we’ll start designing the user friendly interface of the software so that it would be very easy for students to use the software and get most out of it. After designing the user interface(UI), we’ll start coding the software and finally deploy it in a local server, and test it among small groups of people. After testing is successful, we’ll start adding the content. We’ll get help from teachers and collect resources from them and also from the government's e-learning portals, YouTube videos and organize them like a course structure. And, finally we’ll deploy it in a real server and publish our software for free so that everyone can make use of it.

Nowadays there’s internet in almost every part of Nepal and in everyhome there’s at least a smartphone. So, there shouldn't be any issues on these things. But, we have to convince parents to allow their children to use their smartphone for study purposes.

After successful completion of this project, students in the village will have a medium to study even in absence of a teacher. They can study wherever and whenever they want. The video lectures would also be more effective for students to have the clear concept of the topic. And this should help to decrease the dropout rate.
